You sank my Battleship in 2012

Movie: Battleship (2012)

  • Director: Peter Berg
  • Writers: Erich Hoeber, Jon Hoeber
  • Release Date: 18 May 2012 (USA)
  • Genre: Sci-Fi
  • Main cast: Alexander Skarsgard, Brooklyn Decker and Liam Neeson

Plot:
Battleship is one of the important alien invasion movies of 2012. The move is created by those behind the Transformers series, and you’ll recognize their style from the trailer (the sound, different alien devices that transform in deadly objects, …). Ok, the story behind Battleship is that of a fleet of ships that goes out to investigate a strange appearance of unknown origin in the middle of the ocean. After a bit of investigation they find out that an entire army of aliens are on a destructive path and they want to destroy everything that stands in their way. The main difference between this and Transformers is that this time there are no “good” transforming devices to save us from the bad guys. Expect bombs of alien origin, flying ships, flying robot balls that have metallic extensions, and nonetheless alien fighters. And those alien fighters seem badass, strange enough the trailer reveals them fully so there’s no wondering how they look like until the movie is released.

What is strange however is the appearance of Rihanna (yes, the singer) as one of the fighters that helps us fight the aliens. Liam Neeson is one of the commanders of the ships, so all hope is not lost.

Prometheus, the Alien prequel

Movie: Prometheus (2012)

  • Director: Ridley Scott
  • Writers: Jon Spaihts, Damon Lindelof
  • Release Date: 8 June 2012 (USA)
  • Genre: Sci-Fi
  • Main cast: Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce, Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender

Plot:
This is the most expected movie of 2012 for science fiction fans, as Prometheus is linked to the original Alien series of movies. Directed by Ridley Scott, the movie presents the story of a crew that tries to find out the origins of life on Earth by visiting one of the darkest corner of the universe. There’s still a question that was vaguely answered, if Prometheus is indeed an Alien prequel, as Ridley Scott kind of contradicted his sayings. His latest statement says that it’s not really a prequel, but fans of Alien will see its “dna” in the movie. However, after closely inspecting the trailer I strongly believe that there’s more than a simple link between Prometheus and Alien, and these are my observations:

  • An Weyland Industries vehicle image shows up in the trailer (the company that appears in alien vs predator)
  • There’s a scene where the helmet of one crew members is burning, but looks more like acid burn (just as in Alien)
  • A screenshot of what appears to be the Space Jockey (Mala’kak or The Pilot), just as in alien
  • A crew member seems to be suffering from acid burns on his face (nametag says he’s Holloway)
  • David (played by Michael Fassbender) is an Android (just as Ash and Bishop were in the Alien series), because he shows up in a scene where he doesn’t were a helmet, meaning he doesn’t need to breath
  • There’s another scene where a series of pots/urns are symmetrically distributed in a room, and guesses are that those urns contain alien babies
  • Another scene where someone pulls a jelly thing out of an urn, and it does look like it contains an Alien tail, so maybe it’s the precursor of the famous facehugger in Alien
  • One of the last scenes shows a horseshoe spaceship crashing, just like one in the first Alien movie

The details are not that important at this point, but after you’ll watch the trailer for Prometheus you’ll have the same feeling just like after seeing an alien movie. I can just feel that this movie will be the best sci-fi of the year. BTW, Prometheus is the name of the spaceship they use to travel way and beyond, and in Greek mythology he was a Titan, a champion of humans that stole from Zeus to give to the morals – he was punished by the god to be chained to a rock and have an eagle eat his liver over and over again. So what does the ship have in common with this? This is a question we’ll have an answer for only after the movie is released, summer of 2012 please come faster!
