Trivia: Only the second movie musical for Sophia Loren, the first being Man of La Mancha (1972), even though she is a capable singer, as can be heard on many novelty and soundtrack recordings.
Plot: A musical in which Daniel Day-Lewis is playing, who would have thought. Aside him, a female line of actors to measure up: Penélope Cruz, Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman and Kate Hudson. And of course much of it taking place in Italy, where breath-taking landscapes are very common. “Nine” is directed by Rob Marshall who directed Chicago too.
Nine presents the story of Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis), a very famous movie director that confronts with a mid-life crisis in terms of his own creations but also his personal life. There are too many women in his life to joggle with, his wife (Marion Cotillard), his mistress (Penelope Cruz), his muse (Nicole Kidman), his confidant (Judi Dench), an American fashion journalist (Kate Hudson), the whore from his youth (Fergie) and his mother (Sophia Loren).
