Plot:
The best translation I could find for Carancho is scavenger, and this s what the movie is about, the scavengers of accidental deaths. In Argentina 22 people are killed every day in car accidents, around 8000 per year and not less than 100000 in the past decade. Nothing unusual here, except that the dead from these accidents are a traded good for those trying to trick insurance companies. The loopholes in the legal system make this morbid industry to be a multi-million dollar one.

Carancho is directed by Pablo Trapero and follows Sosa (Ricardo Darin), which is an injury attorney that follows ambulance personal in order to be there when a death happen – not your most ethical attorney, but that’s not new. Lujan (Martina Gusman) is a young doctor working on an ambulance, and fells for Sosa – since bodies are currency for the black market of insurances, and it’s something Sosa is looking forward to, the two start to have problems given that Lujan’s main purpose is to save those from accidents.

Carancho was Argentina’s Official Selection for Best Foreign Language Film for the 84th Annual Academy Awards, and it stands a chance in the Oscars.
